It is interesting how the SPARTATHLON totally avoids the necessity of having a company sponsor the race.

For example, the STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION - www.snfoundation.org - sponsors the race.

This year and last year the Spartathlon was made possible through the exclusive support of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation which is an international philanthropic organization that supports charitable activities in four primary areas: arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare.

The Foundation makes grants to not-for-profit organizations throughout the world. In addition, the Foundation maintains a major commitment to supporting programs in Greece through the guidance of a locally based advisory committee.

I think that races should be sponsored more often by charitable organizations like this one. Furthermore, I feel that these foundation-sponsored events should give some sort of privileged eligibility to funding for projects that fit within the scope of the foundations purpose that are offered by champions of the race.

I wonder who would run the hardest then?

Nice finish. Perhaps if some company would throw down some real prize money, some Ultras would have finishes like that too. Money makes a difference. Baaaahhhhhh

This is a truly inspiring video. This is the kind of video that just gives you goosebumps and serves as inspiration when out on the trails.

Feel sorry for her? No way! She just received one of the most important lessons in competitive sports from one of the greatest runners around. It's a shame that the heat and the tragedy that occurred overshadowed what looked to be one of the best marathons in recent years. The men's marathon came down to a photo finish and the men's wheelchair race was also decided in the final few hundred meters. You gotta love a close finish at the end of a long race!
